An opportunity for
experienced handlers to
work with their dogs
The sport of dog agility is very exciting.  Even if you only
want to participate for fun and not aim for competition,
both you and your dog need variety in training.   Dogs can
react differently when surrounded by lots of activity.  That's
why a sho'n'go is essential in providing you and your
partner the invaluable opportunity to run in a setting other
than your regular class or backyard.  So many times we've
heard people say at a show (after their dog has flown off
the teeter or refused the tire)  "Well, he does that perfectly
in class".

A sho'n'go ( or fun match) allows a handler and dog to
experience a trial setting, without the stress associated
with serious competition.   We have excellent equipment
and our aim is to provide:

The idea of dog agility was first conceived in 1977 by John Varley, a member of the Crufts Dog Show Committee.  He was asked to organize entertainment in the
main arena in the gap between the obedience championship and the group judging at Crufts.  Varley imagined a canine version of horse show jumping due to
his experience with horses.  He asked his friend Peter Meanwell, a renowned Working Trials competitor and judge, to develop a fun dog agility event based on
his working knowledge of dogs.

As it continues today, dog agility was intended to be a fun event without being dangerous, and that it would provide spectator appeal.

The dog agility event was unveiled on February 10th 1978 at the Crufts Dog Show in London, England, the first day of the show.  It consisted of two teams headed
by Peter Meanwell and Trevor Jones respectively, with four handlers/dogs per team.  Each team also had one reserve.

The event was such a success with the crowd that it was followed up in 1979 at both Crufts and the International Horse Show at Olympia.

As soon as 1986, the sport of dog agility jumped "the pond" to the U.S. when the United States Dog Agility Association (USDAA) was formed.  In the period of
time since then, several other organizations have come into being to support this evolving, fast-growing and fun dog sport, which now encircles the globe in
many countries.

As a final note, John Varley emigrated to Sydney, Australia in the 1980's, continuing in the sport until he died a few years later.  Peter Meanwell died in 2002.

                                  Reflections on Life

Grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway, the
good fortune to run into the ones that I do, and the eyesight to tell the
difference.  Now that I'm older here's what I've discovered.

1.    I started out with nothing and I still have most of it.
2.   My wild oats have turned into prunes and All-Bran.
3.    I finally got my head together, now my body is falling apart.
4.    Funny, I don't remember being absent minded.
5.    All reports are in: Life is now officially unfair.
6.    If all is not lost, where is it?
7.    It is easier to get older than it is to get wiser.
8.   Some days you're the dog some days you are the hydrant.
9.    I wish the buck stopped here ........ I could use a few
10. Kids in the back seat cause accidents .......Accidents in the back
       seat cause kids.
11. These days, I spend a lot of time thinking about the hereafter .......
I go somewhere to get something, and wonder what I'm after.
